深入解读
看到 eliminate 一词，不难联想起熟词 limit （限制）来，两者同源都是源自拉丁语 limen （门槛）。其中， eliminate 由前缀 e- （无、除去）+词根 limin （门槛、限制）+ 后缀 -ate （做、造成、使）构成，16世纪60年代进入英语后原指“推出去、去除、扔出门外”。
等到了1714年后， eliminate 开始发展出现在的主要含义指“排除、清除、剔除、根除”，多指完全去除某个不想要的，且通常是作为构成要素或组成部分存在于内的东西，比如：
- 警方通过调查已经排除了两名长得丑且没出息的嫌疑犯。
The police have eliminated two ugly and futile suspects from their investigation. - 开设红灯区并不能减轻和消除这种恶性循环，相反还可能加剧。
The creation of red-light district should not reduce and eliminate this vicious cycle, the opposite may also be exacerbated.
从这个概念进一步引申， eliminate 可以用在比赛或竞赛中表示“淘汰”，即将对手或对方队伍排除在赛程之外，常用被动语态，比如：
- 看到这位世界冠军在第一轮比赛中就被淘汰，我大吃一惊。
It startled me to see that the world champion was eliminated in the first round of the competition.
而比淘汰更为残忍的是， eliminate 还可以用来表示“消灭、干掉”敌人或政治对手，用这个词代替 kill 时会显得行为较为正面，比如：
- 一位勤勉的警官被指控帮助一个贩毒黑帮铲平敌对帮派。
An industrious police officer was accused of helping a drug gang eliminate rivals.
