深入解读
Plummet 是一个经常出现在《经济学人》中的单词，该词源自古法语 plomet （石墨、铅；铅锤、测深锤），14世纪末进入英语后也是用来作名词表示“铅锤、测深锤”。从其重量和作用出发，可以用来喻指“重压物、压抑物”，比如：
- 无知本身压得那个幼稚的女孩好沉。
Ignorance itself is a plummet over the naive girl.
等到了17世纪20年代， plummet 也曾用来作动词表示“水深测量”，类似于小站（微信公众号：田间小站）年初推送的 小词详解 | fathom 。
不过今天 plummet 的主要含义，则是最早有记录于1933年开始出现的动词含义指“快速落下、陡直掉下”，据说出自早期的飞行驾驶员们，通常用来指某人或某物像铅锤那般从高处以很快的速度直线坠落到地面上，比如：
- 这架喷气式飞机突然着火，急速坠地。坠机导致金属和玻璃碎片在空中乱飞。
