Excel 一词对于绝大多数小伙伴来说应该都是一个极为熟悉的单词,因其作为一款常用的电子表格软件名,与 Word 和 PowerPoint 一并是装机必备办公软件。该词源自拉丁语 excellere (上升、超越、出众),15世纪进入英语后也是用来表示“胜过、优于”,尤指胜过其他所有人,比如:

  • 她的棋艺曾比对手们都高明,但现在她在走下坡路了。
    She excelled her opponents at playing chess, but now she is on a downward spiral.

既然在某个领域胜过其他所有人,那么也就意味着在该领域是个出类拔萃的高手,或者说在该领域非常擅长。相应发展到现在,更多的是用 excel 引申指“擅长、善于、突出”,强调特别擅长或精通某项活动或某个科目,并取得卓越的成绩、成就、品质等,常用搭配 excel in/at sth/at doing sth ,比如:

  • 那个口音很特别的女孩上学时学语言一直是出类拔萃的。
    The girl who has a peculiar accent always excelled in languages at school.

而多见于英式英语的表达 excel yourself ,别看其字面意思是“胜过自己”,实则是指“胜过平时的自己”,也就是“超常发挥、比平常做得好”,比如:

  • 他善于设计可供师生在课堂上使用的语言游戏,但这次简直是好上加好。
    He's good at devising language games that you can play with students in class, but this time he really excelled himself.
