深入解读
Startle 这个单词比较好记，看到它就很容易联想到熟词 start （开始）来。事实上， startle 正是由 start 的词源 + 反复后缀 -le 构成（类似的构词法还有小站上个月推送的 topple），14世纪出现在英语中后原本用来表示“跑来跑去、跳来跳去、来回猛烈移动”。
这个概念等到了16世纪90年代后开展演变为今义表示“使惊吓、使受惊、使吓一跳、使大吃一惊”，多指因突然的惊吓或意料不到的刺激等而使人惊骇、震惊或使人惊跳、畏缩，有时候恐惧感较弱，比如：
- 我一进办公室，发现一条恶狗坐在里面，把我吓了一跳。
It startled me to find a savage dog sitting in my office. - 那个沉默寡言的女孩正在聚精会神地看书，被他刺耳的嗓音吓了一跳。
The reticent girl was concentrating on her book and his strident voice startled her.
