Tedious 一词源自拉丁语 taedium 的形容词形式 taediosus (令人疲倦的、令人厌烦的),15世纪初期经古法语 tedieus 进入英语后也是指“单调乏味的、令人厌烦的”以及“冗长的、啰唆的”,多用于形容文章、演讲、演出或工作、任务、局面等持续时间或耗费时间过长且沉闷乏味,并常使人感到沮丧或不舒服,比如:
- 我们不得不听他唠叨他那次抢救行动的繁琐细节。
We had to listen to the tedious details of his salvage operation.
而与 tedious 同样源自拉丁语 taedium 的 tedium 则是作名词表示“单调乏味、令人厌烦”以及“冗长、啰唆”,常意味着缺乏合适的或足够的发泄出路而压抑活力,以及由于令人烦恼的活动缺乏、消遣单一、环境单调等而导致精神沉闷或低落,比如:
- 拍摄工作使她承受了额外的压力。她开始怀疑自己会不会被这份枯燥的工作逼疯。
The filming imposed an additional strain on her. She began to wonder whether she wouldn't go mad with the tedium of the job.
