深入解读

Dwell 这个词比较好记，就是在熟词 well 前面加了个字母 d 。该词源自原始日耳曼语，在古英语时期拼作 dwellan 指“导致错误、欺骗、误导”。错误或者误导的直接结果就是让人走弯路使事情不能及时完成，于是这个概念在12世纪末期演变为“拖延、延迟、迟到”。

而到了14世纪中期后，这个概念再进一步从“拖延、延迟”演变为“逗留、停着不走”，并发展为现在的主要含义指“居住、栖身”，与 live 和 reside 十分相近，只是常作为正式用语或书面用语使用，口语中通常用 live 代替，比如：

恰在这时，无视法律的伐木工人们正在毁坏雨林，践踏居住于其中的土著居民的权利。
Right on cue, loggers who flout the law are destroying rain forests and trampling on the rights of natives who dwell in it.

说到住，中文里常用“心里住着一个人”来形容心心念念某个人。而与之有些类似的是，英语里常用短语动词 dwell on/upon sth 来表示“老是想着、沉湎于”以及“一直在说、赘述、强调”某事，尤指对某个不好的、令人不快的或最好应忘记的事，进行长时间的回想、讲述或写作，比如：

老是想过去是没有用的。我们应当想出一个计策来帮他挽回受损的公众形象。
It's no use dwelling on the past. We should devise a scheme to help him salvage his tarnished public image.
演讲时她一直在说遭受疾病和饥饿折磨的人们所处的困境。
In her speech, she dwelt on the plight of the sick and the hungry.

其次，这个短语动词还可以用来形容目光等“停留在、细看、凝视”，也就是长时间的看，比如：

起初，他们凝视着美丽的景色。随后，泪水模糊了他们的视线。
At first, their eyes dwelled on the beautiful scene. Soon afterwards, tears blurred their eyes.

值得注意的是， dwell 的过去式和过去分词有两种拼写形式，既可以写作 dwelt ，也可以写作 dwelled 。
