Furious 是一个对很多小伙伴来说不会陌生的单词,一眼看到往往首先就会联想起美国赛车系列电影《速度与激情》(Fast & Furious)来。而 fast and furious 本身是一个起源于19世纪中期的英语习语,主要指表演、演出、电影等“快速激烈的、情节节奏快且变化多端的”。
这其中的 furious 即表示“强烈的、猛烈的、激烈的”以及“高速的、大力的”,多指用巨大的精力、努力、速度或暴力做某事,强调因强烈的情感而充满着兴奋或狂热,比如:
- 他在一场激烈的辩论中展现出了杰出的口才。
He exhibited his oratorical prowess in a furious debate. - 她驾车飞驰而去。但她并不知道发动机出了毛病。
She drove off at a furious pace. But she didn't know that the motor was out of whack.
