深入解读
Timid 一词源自法语 timide （容易受惊的、害羞的）或者说直接源自拉丁语 timidus （恐惧的、害怕的、胆小的），16世纪40年代进入英语后也是用来表示“羞怯的、胆怯的、胆小的”或者说“缺乏勇气的、缺乏自信的”，强调缺乏勇气和胆量，通常意味着对变化或未知不确定的冒险有着极端的谨慎和恐惧，比如：
- 一个把肥胖部位也错认作曼妙曲线的羞怯而娴静的姑娘
a timid and demure girl who mistakes a bulge for a curve - 命运宠爱勇敢者，但是抛弃胆小者。我们最好还是开始干起来，别再闲荡了。
Fortune favors the bold, but abandons the timid. We'd better get started and stop fiddling about.
从这个概念进一步引申，还可以用 timid 表示“犹豫不决的、瞻前顾后的”，比如：
- 批评总统的人认为他在应对风云变幻的国际局势时过于瞻前顾后。他总是从这一时的犹豫不决摇摆到下一刻的犹豫不决。
The President's critics say he has been too timid in responding to changing international developments. He always lurches from indecision to indecision.
