Agitate 一词源自拉丁语 agitare （使持续或猛烈地运动，向前推动，驱使），16世纪80年代进入英语后先是用来表示“使激动、使焦虑、使躁动不安”， 强调内心的焦虑难于控制、表露于外，并失去冷静和自制力，比如：
- 我不想告诉她昨天她那精明的叔父被控犯谋杀罪，免得她焦虑。
I didn't want to agitate her by telling her that her shrewd uncle was indicted for murder yesterday.
等到了16世纪90年代后， agitate 开始用其字面意思表示“搅动、摇动”液体等，相较 shake 而言往往含有上下搅动或动作剧烈之义，这通常也就意味着动作幅度更为拉长，比如：
- 将粉末倒入溶剂中，搅动到溶解为止。
Pour the powder into the solvent and agitate it until the powder has dissolved.
而到了17世纪40年代后， agitate 从持续来回猛烈运动这个概念出发，开始引申表示对计划、问题等“展开激烈讨论”，并到了19世纪20年代后进一步演化为尤指为法律、社会状况的改变而公开“激烈争论、鼓动、煽动、大声疾呼”，多指唤起公众对某一问题的关注、以期促使采取行动的运动，强调论证有力、目的实际，这也就意味着宣传积极、寻求改变的决心坚定，常用搭配 agitate for/against sth ，比如：
- 鼓吹社会变革的政治团体们公开谴责政府处理这场危机的方式。
Political groups agitating for social change publicly denounced the government's handling of the crisis. - 几个主要的工会继续大声疾呼要求加薪。在这一问题上，其立场并未与政府保持一致。
