深入解读

上个月小站刚讲了 throttle 这个勒死人的单词，今天再来说说 smother 这个闷死人的单词。

Smother 一词比较好记，就是在熟词 mother 前面加个 s 。该词源自古英语 smorian （使窒息而死），其基本含义也是“使窒息而死、闷死（某人）”，主要指通过捂住人或动物的嘴鼻使之无法呼吸而亡，常用搭配 smother sb (with sth) ，比如：

他们威胁要用塑料袋把这些家畜闷死。
They threatened to smother the domesticated animals with plastic bags.
他用枕头闷死了一位守法公民。
He smothered a law-abiding citizen with a pillow.

杀人毕竟太血腥，用在正道上， smother 则可以表示“把（火）闷熄”，比如：

她鬼鬼祟祟地往身后扫了一眼，然后扔过一条毯子盖在灶上，把火闷熄。
With a furtive glance over her shoulder, she threw a blanket over the stove to smother the flames.

除了可以灭物理上的火以外， smother 也可以用来灭心理上的火，即“压制、控制、忍住”感情或反应等，以及表示“压制、钳制、扼杀、镇压”某种活动或过程，比如：

把哈欠忍了回去；憋住不笑出声来；刚想张嘴笑又收了回去

无论是闷死人还是闷熄火，一般都是用比较厚的物料盖住，所以后来 smother 也引申指用某物“厚厚地覆盖”，这与熟词僻义栏目讲过的 cake 有些相似，常用搭配 smother sth/sb with/in sth 比如：

玛丽姨妈把一大角的涂了厚厚一层奶油的多脂甜点放在我盘子里。
Auntie Mary put a huge wedge of rich dessert smothered in cream on my plate.
她劈头盖脑给她情意绵绵的恋人一通狂吻。
She smothered her tender lover with kisses.

狂吻这个表达小站在小词详解 | lavish 中也曾提到过，里面 lavish 指“过分慷慨地给予”。而与之类似的是， smother 也可以引申指“过分关心爱护、溺爱”，多强调宠爱到了令人窒息或压抑的地步，比如：

我想那个温顺的女孩解除婚约是因为她感觉他的爱快要让她窒息了。
I think the docile girl broke off their engagement because she felt smothered by him.

当用作名词时， smother 自然表示“令人窒息的浓烟、雾气、尘埃、飞雪等”或“窒息状态、被抑制状态”等，比如：
