Ferment 是一个与 Fremont（费利蒙市，美国加州旧金山湾区东南部城市）有些形似的单词，源自拉丁语 fervere （煮沸、翻滚），14世纪末期进入英语后表示“（使）发酵”，比如：
- 果汁存放过久就会发酵。
Fruit juices ferment if they are kept for too long.
果汁经过发酵可以酝酿成酒。而 ferment 在英语里也可以用来表示“酝酿”二字在汉语里的引申义，比如：
- 难以忍受的赤贫酝酿了强烈的不满。
Oppressive and abject poverty fermented violent discontent.
