Grouse 一词最早出现于 16世纪30年代，作名词表示“一种猎鸟（game bird）”，对应今义“松鸡”或“松鸡肉”，比如：

不过 grouse 同小站之前推过的 staunch, steep, cue, trump, secrete, retort 等一样，也是个同形异义词。其更为常用的含义是作动词表示“抱怨、发牢骚”，多见于口语或非正式表达，强调以一种令其他人感到厌烦的方式抱怨别人或者琐事，常用搭配为 grouse about sb/sth ，比如：
