深入解读

Align 一词对于计算机专业或者稍微学过网页编程的小伙伴来说不会陌生，常用 text-align:center 之类的代码在层叠样式表（CSS, Cascading Style Sheets）中实现“居中对齐”。

具体来说， align 源自古法语 alignier （排成一行），15世纪初进入英语后原用来表示狼、狗等“交配”，也是取字面意思“使成一条直线”，见过狗狗交配的应该不难理解这个概念转换。

等到了1853年之后， align 开始回归本义，并将其发展为现在的主要含义表示“对准、校直、排整齐”，多指将多个物体平行排列成一条直线，常用搭配 align sth with sth ，比如：

当枪的标尺、准星和目标成一条直线时，开火！然后把枪藏在竹丛里。
When you've aligned the notch on the gun with the target, fire! Then secrete the gun in the bamboo thicket.

从“对准、校直”这个概念出发， align 很自然地就被用来泛化指“校正、调准、调整”或者说“使一致”，常用搭配 align sth with/to sth ，强调使事物处于正确或适当的相对位置上，比如：

主食匮乏造成价格上涨。目前国内价格已调整到与世界市场一致。
A dearth of staple foods caused the prices to go up. Domestic prices have been aligned with those in world markets at present.

而字面意思是“使自己与某人或某物相一致”的短语动词 align yourself with sb/sth ，其内涵即“与……保持一致、与……结盟”，多指公开支持某个组织、某套观点或某个赞同的人，比如：

有明显的迹象表明首相正在与自由党人结盟。
There are overt signs that the prime minister is aligning himself with the liberals.
