Staunch 一词源自古法语 estanche (防水的、水密的),15世纪初期进入英语时原指“不透水的”,该含义发展到今天则演化为“牢固的、坚固的”,比如:
- 这些坚固的城墙可以抵挡持续的炮火突袭。
These staunch walls could withstand a sustained blitz of cannon fire.
不过现在更多的是用其引申义“忠实的、坚定的”,由于该义源自“不透水的”,所以主要强调外在的任何影响都无法削弱其忠诚或信仰,比如:
- 作为一位忠实的朋友和盟友,他绝不会在最需要的时刻抛弃他的朋友。
As a staunch friend and ally, he will never forsake his friends in their hour of need. - 他坚决支持控制财政开支。

另外值得注意的是, staunch 同小站之前推过的 steep, cue, trump, secrete, retort, fret 等一样,也是个同形异义词,还有一个较为正式的动词含义“止住(血等的)流出”则源自于古法语 estanchier (使血液等停止流动),这在美式英语中则多用 stanch 表达,比如:
- 汤姆试图用绷带来止血。
