深入解读
Cue 这个单词现在是个网络流行用语,在看小站这篇文章之前,想必很多小伙伴之前都已经见过或者用过。不过你知道它的出处吗?
Cue 一词源自拉丁语 quando (when)。在16到17世纪的时候,人们在舞台剧的剧本上用 Q 作为 quando 的缩写,用来提示演员上场,而这个 Q 后来也就演变为了单词 cue 表示“(戏剧或电影中用来暗示演员开始说或做某事的)尾白、提示”,比如:
- 那位缺乏天资的女演员站在舞台侧面等待着出场的提示。
The actress destitute of talent stood in the wings and waited for her cue to go on.
从表演上的尾白、提示这个概念泛化而来, cue 很自然地就引申指“暗示、提示、信号”或者作动词表示“给(某人)暗示或提示”,比如:
- 他们开始洗刷碗碟了,这就是暗示我们该离开迎婴派对了。
They started washing up, so that was our cue to leave the baby shower. - 鼓手点了一下头,暗示领唱开始。
With a nod of his head, the drummer cued the lead singer in.
知道了上面说的词源之后,习语 (right) on cue 的意思就很好理解了,即“恰好在这时、就在这时候”,多指事情就发生在某人说了或认为它会发生之后,比如:
- 我正纳闷莎拉埋伏在哪了,恰在这时,她就进来了。
I was just wondering where Sarah was lurking, when, right on cue, she came in.
而习语 take your cue from sb/sth 的字面意思是“按某人的提示行事”,实则引申表示“照某人的样子做、模仿某人”或“深受某人或某事物的影响”,比如:
- 他总是看上司的眼色行事。这就是为什么她打心眼儿里讨厌他。
He often takes his cue from the boss. That's why she has a visceral dislike of him. - 建筑师们对新旅馆的设计深受附近银行建筑的影响,决定一改传统。
The architects took their cue for the design of the new hotel from the nearby banks, and decided to flout convention.
另外值得注意的是, cue 同小站之前推过的 trump, secrete, retort, fret, peer, loom 等一样,也是个同形异义词,还有一个含义表示“(台球等撞球游戏的)球杆”则是源自英语单词 queue (古义:辫子)的变体,比如:
- 那个流浪汉第一次玩台球时才9岁。那时,他看上去就像是他那个帅气稳重的哥哥的迷你版。
The tramp was nine when he picked up a cue for the first time. He looked like a miniature version of his handsome and sedate big brother then.
