Weary 是一个与小站之前推送过的 wary 较为形似也容易混淆的单词,该词主要指经过长时间连续不断的辛苦努力工作后而“疲劳的、疲倦的、疲惫的、精神不振的”,比如:
- 他的作品是经典与流行音乐有趣的混合,可以给你疲惫的心灵充注活力。
His work is an interesting hybrid of popular and classical music. It can replenish your weary soul.
这种疲惫常意味着无法忍受、经历更多相同的事情,或者因精力或兴趣耗尽而不愿意继续努力或关注,因而也可以用 weary of (doing) sth 表示“对……不再感兴趣、不再热心、感到厌烦的”,常作正式用语使用,比如:
- 她很快便对听他唠叨他那次抢救行动的繁琐细节厌烦起来。
She soon grew weary of listening to the tedious details of his salvage operation.
反过来 weary 也常作书面用语指“使人疲劳的、令人厌烦的”,主要形容某个事情需要大量的精力或耐力,或者说又累又乏味的,比如使人疲乏的长途旅程(a long and weary journey)、令人心焦的等待(a weary wait)。
