深入解读
Loom 一词同小站之前推过的 faction, swallow, staple, founder, lurch, teem 等一样，也是个同形异义词。其作名词时表示“织布机”，缩写自古英语 geloma （工具、器具），原指“任何形式的工具”，这从复合词 heirloom （传家宝、世代相传之物）可以看出端倪。
用作动词时，则词源不详，现主要表示“赫然耸现、隐约显现”或“战争、危机等危险性事物阴森地逼近”，尤指令人惊恐地隐现，好像从雾中浮现出来一样，比如：
- 财政危机迫在眉睫。
There was a fiscal crisis looming. - 工厂可能关闭，令廉价而温顺的劳动力们焦虑不安。
The threat of closure looms over the cheap and docile workforce.
要想进一步强调问题的严重性，则还可以使用 loom large 这个习语表示问题或忧虑等“显得突出、变得严重”甚至是“萦绕心中、挥之不去”，比如：
