Enthrall (在英式英语中常拼作 enthral ,两种拼法的现在分词、过去式以及过去分词都双写 l)一词由前缀 en-(使;置于……之中)+英语单词 thrall (奴役、束缚、控制)构成,16世纪70年代出现在英语中后本用来表示“使沦为奴隶,奴役”,比如:
- 那个浑身上下每个毛孔都散发着性感的女孩让他着了迷,并使他与兄弟们疏远了。他完全被她的美色俘虏了。
The girl who oozed sexuality from every pore floated his boat and estranged him from his brothers. He was completely enthralled by her beauty.
不过这个含义到了17世纪初后就不再流行,转而同上面这个例句一样引申为“迷住、吸引住”,多用于被动语态,强调被某人或某物完全吸引和迷住,使自身全部的注意力或兴趣都集中于该人或该物身上,形同被其奴役那般,比如:
- 她穿着高跟鞋一步三晃地跟在他后面走。他令她动心,让她着迷。
She teetered after him in her high-heeled shoes. He drew and enthralled her. - 她被他刮胡子时编造的故事迷住了。
She was enthralled by the stories he spun while he shaved.
