深入解读
Eminent 一词源自拉丁语 eminere （突出、显眼），其本义是指“明显的、显著的、突出的”，多用于强调某种积极品质的存在，也可以形容建筑、山丘等“高耸的、凸出的”，比如：
- 他是个极公正的人。
He was a man of eminent fairness. - 一所耸立在山顶附近一尘不染的房子
a house in pristine condition standing eminent near the top of a hill
不过现在更多的是用来表示“（在地位、学识、品格、专业等方面）卓越的、著名的、显赫的”，比如：
- 那个著名建筑师几个月的艰辛工作终于取得了成功。
Months of hard work of that eminent architect culminated in success. - 他以慷慨大度著称，绝不会在最需要的时刻抛弃朋友。
He is eminent for his generosity, and will never forsake his friends in their hour of need.
昨天小站刚推的 expropriate 讲到有“政府或权力机构等无偿征用、没收私有土地、财产等用于公共用途”的含义，而 eminent 也有一个与之相关的专业术语叫 eminent domain ，源自拉丁语 dominium eminens （最高所有权），指的是“（政府对私有财产的）征用权”或者说“国家征用权”，比如上面《纽约时报》的例句就有用到。
国家征用权是政府在没有取得私人财产所有者的同意时，也可征用私人财产的权力。在美国，当公共项目所需要征用的私人不动产的所有者不愿谈判出售该财产时，政府通常的作法便是实施国家征用权来推进项目的建设。
值得注意的是， eminent 容易与小站之前推过的 imminent （临近的、即将发生的、迫在眉睫的）一词相混淆，在阅读写作时要小心区别。
