深入解读
Restive 这个单词看起来很简单，一眼望去就会联想到是熟词 rest （休息；剩余部分）的衍生词，很容易误以为其含义是与休息相关，或者说以为是与 restless （没有真正休息的、难以入睡的、辗转反侧的）相对。
实则不然，该词衍生自 rest 的“剩余部分”这个概念，15世纪初进入英语后原指“静止的、不前进的”，取不向前进即剩余留下之义。等到了17世纪80年代起， restive 从这个含义出发开始用来形容马等“逡巡不前的、倔头倔脑不肯前行的”，多指马顽固地站着或向后或向侧方移动，拒绝前进，类似小站（微信公众号：田间小站）一年前推送过的 小词详解 | balk ，比如：
- 船在波涛起伏的海浪中剧烈摇摆。它忽上忽下地剧烈颠簸，比最不听话的烈马还要难驾驭。

转来形容人时， restive 相应也是指“倔强的、不听话的、不受管束的”，尤指人因为厌烦或不满而不能保持平静、沉默或顺从，拒绝服从命令，强调难以驾驭或任性，比如：
