[verb] begin or introduce (a system, policy, or period)
American presidents are always inaugurated on 20 January.
The new centre for research on toxic waste was inaugurated half a year ago. But fiscal problems have snagged the centre for the past six months. -
The new theatre was inaugurated by the mayor. And this surrogate mother did part-time work as an usher in the theatre.
The European Community inaugurated the Single European Market in 1993.
The moon landing inaugurated a new era in space exploration. And he started building rockets as a teenager, and mused about making space tourism a reality.
