Aptitude 是一个与熟词 attitude （态度、看法）十分形似的单词，源自晚期拉丁语 aptitudo （适合），由词根 apt （适应、能力）+后缀 -itude （性质、状态）构成，虽然17世纪40年代起该词也曾被用来表示“恰当、贴切、适宜”这个与前面拉丁语相应的含义，不过现已不再流行。该词最早于15世纪初进入英语用来表示“倾向、习性”，多指一种与生俱来的自然倾向，比如：
- 燕子有筑巢的习性。

不过，现在使用更多的是其于16世纪40年代发展出来的引申义“天生的学习能力”，即今义“天资、天赋、天生的才能”，多指先天或后天习得的运用自如的能力，常暗示接受能力强，能迅速掌握一种学术训练或艺术技巧，比如：
