深入解读
Esteem 这个单词比较好记，就是在小站之前推过的 teem 前面多了 es 两个字母。该词源自拉丁语 aestimare （估值、估价），经古法语 estimer （估价、测定）于15世纪中期进入英语，最初也是表示“估计……的价值、评价”，也就是类似于现在的 estimate 。
不过到了16世纪30年代后， esteem 开始发展出今天的主要含义“尊重、敬重”，既可以用作动词也可以用作名词，强调除了尊敬之外，还对对方有着极高的评价以及随之而来的珍视和温情，比如：
- 她所有的同侪对她的实证研究工作都十分尊崇。
Her empirical work is highly esteemed by all her peers. - 小小礼物，聊表敬意，请笑纳。
Please accept this small gift as a token of our esteem.
除此之外， esteem 还可以用作正式用语表示“认为、把……看作”，多指以某种特定的方式看待某人或某事，比如：
- 她被认为是最完美的小说家。凡是俗气的东西，她都打心眼儿里讨厌。
She was esteemed the perfect novelist. She had a visceral dislike of all things tawdry. - 评论家暗地里抨击她大肆挥霍、恣意张扬的作风。但她认为自己懂得什么是生活。
Critics attacked her lavish spending and flamboyant style in a covert way. But she esteemed that she knew what life was.
