Whiff 一词最早出现于13世纪拼作 weffe 表示“难闻的气味”，其现代拼法则是到了16世纪后期才随着吸烟流行起来，可能是受英语单词 whiffle （风等一阵阵地吹、紧一阵慢一阵地刮）影响而来，现在主要表示“一点儿气味、一股味道”，多指迎面走过某人或某物时闻到的一股淡淡的或持续时间较短的气味，比如：
